Description
Mulch films & weed membrane are used to modify soil temperature, limit weed growth, prevent moisture loss, and improve crop yield as well as precocity. Because of their thickness, use of pigments and their exposure to high solar irradiation, mulch films require proper light and thermal stabilizers with intermediate chemical resistance.
Agricultural plastic mulch is used to produce specialty crops to alter soil temperature, retain soil moisture and reduce weed stress, ultimately increasing crop productivity. Low-density polyethylene (PE) is the most commonly used plastic covering because it is inexpensive, easy to process, highly durable, and flexible.
One way in which plastic mulch (BDM and PE) may indirectly affect soil ecosystem and microbial community function is by altering soil microclimate and atmosphere. As a barrier to the soil surface, plastic mulch reduces evaporation and gas exchange, increases temperature and reduces light transmission. Compared to BDM, PE mulch caused greater warming and was less breathable, leading to the accumulation of soil CO₂. As a barrier to evaporation, plastic mulch causes an increase in soil moisture content, which ultimately alters the physical structure of the soil; for example, by increasing the proportion of water-stable aggregates. Favorable moisture and temperature conditions under plastic mulch also affect plant roots, often stimulating root development and increasing root exudation. This results in higher nutrient availability for rhizosphere microorganisms.
